Album Review: Leon Thomas III is not playing with y’all, you hear me. From producing to songwriting for himself and others, to performing live (cause the mic be on, okay!) He is an incredible artist. Instrumentalist are making a comeback, great storytelling is being reintroducing, and genre fluidity & flexibility is being encouraged. Mutt Deluxe: HEEL is the evidence of this, without a shadow of doubt.

The album fluctuates between playboy and a hopeless romantic. Though the drive behind each song lyricallyis mercurial and transparent, I think it consistently delivers the accuracy of quilted emotions. For example, “Answer The Phone” explains the yearning and regret behind the protagonist wronged decisions, then the vibe “Safe Place” gives one night stand and a casual temporary fling, and “I Do” is a romantic monogamist heartfelt song. I will say that this album has an essence of rock and roll, that most RnB songs aren’t doing now. I think this help pertain to Leon Thomas album rockstar/romantic theme (and personal brand), and dress the album well! I will also say Leon Thomas has a unique and sensual sound that reminds me of D’angelo in a way, but that is neither here or there.

With MUTT Deluxe: HEEL is features nine more tracks, the particular new tracks I like were “Rather Be Alone” featuring Halle , Dirt On My Shoes” featuring Kehlani and “Party Favors” featuring Big Sean. Of course I love the title song MUTT, do I think that we needed all of the remixes on it? Not so much. I feel Leon Thomas did the song justice the first drop and everyone heard how fire it was and immediately wanted to hop on it, but once I watched his documentary and saw how highly he had admired Chris Brown and explained how he listened to him growing up, I understand the enthusasim. That also goes for Freddie Gibbs because he always delievers on a feature. I love his features with Joyce Wrice!

Overall, I am so proud of Leon Thomas as he finally steps into the spotlight and gets his flowers that were long overdue and were absolutely deserved. He has stayed completely humble up until this point and now he is walking in his confidence and flourishing! I am super excited to hear more from him and sending my congratulation to him for the success of his album MUTT Deluxe: HEEL
